March 1 – April 20
Exhibit opening March 2 at 11:00am
See the exhibit, meet the artists, enjoy some refreshments!
The Young Artist Program gives kids the opportunity to have fun while learning about visual art and creating work of their own. We had 4 classes that began with discussing Henri Matisse, looking at examples of his work, then heading into the gallery for hands-on activity.
The exhibit includes the projects made by kids ages 5-14, exploring various aspects of Matisse’s work – paying attention to colour, line and pattern. We had a lot of fun with this group and we hope you enjoy the show!
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French visual artist, known for his painting and use of colour. Influenced by the works of artists like Manet, Cézanne, Vangogh and Picasso, the intense colourism of Matisse’s painted works between 1900 and 1905 made him known as one of the Fauves (French for “wild beasts”). Fauves believed in the power of colour to express emotion, create joy, and even heal. When ill health in his final years prevented him from painting, he created an important body of work in the medium of cut-paper collage.
